Licensing Information

Ready to take the next step toward obtaining your massage therapy license? Here is a high-level outline of the steps needed to obtain a massage therapy license in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

New Jersey Licensing Steps:

  • Complete an Approved Massage Therapy Program
  • Pass the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx)
    Register and schedule your exam through the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).
  • Apply for Licensure
    Submit your application to the New Jersey Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy.
  • Complete a Criminal Background Check
    Follow the instructions provided by the NJ Board to complete your background check.
  • Once the application is completed, your school will submit your transcripts and supervision form to the state.
  • Submit Proof of Liability Insurance
    Obtain and submit proof of professional liability insurance as required by the state.
  • Pay the Required Fees
    Ensure all fees are paid during the application process.

License Renewal Requirements
New Jersey
Renewal Period: Every two years.

Continuing Education: 20 hours of continuing education (CE) every renewal period, including 2 hours in ethics and 1 hour in NJ law.

Pennsylvania
Renewal Period: Every two years.

Continuing Education: 24 hours of CE every renewal period, including 4 hours in ethics.
